Lawbuzz suit update
Written by Todd Harrison
Monday, 18 January 2010

Shortly after we wrote about the legal battle between Lawbuzz and AdviceScene.com, an entry was posted on the latter site's blog providing an update.

The blog post, by AdviceScene founder Nancy Kinney, describes the matter as “settled” and takes the Lawbuzz online community to task for posting defamatory comments. “Lawyers should know better than to publish blatantly untrue and defamatory statements,” Kinney writes, “even if they were made online anonymously.”

The post concludes:

I am a huge supporter of free speech and I don’t like censorship at all, however when free speech reaches the point where people and businesses get hurt, there should be a way to put an end to it. People are free to be completely critical of me and this site; in fact I welcome criticism openly. However when those criticisms are based on untrue allegations specifically meant to hurt my business, that’s where I draw the line. Statements like the ones made last year on lawbuzz.ca, some of them from well-known lawyers, hurt our chances of making a go of a site that strives to bring greater legal understanding to the public; and can not be tolerated.

At the bottom of the blog post are links to the associated legal documents.

I have never seen anything like this. I just spent a tonne of time looking at the internet and I was unable to locate one link to anybody other than advicescene or their founder talking about the lawsuit. It is like advicescene is out to slander themselves.

Nobody cared about this before or after it was on lawbuzz.

Advicescene person seems to be the driving force behind getting these comments out in the media. Even publishing the statement of claim. If these allegedly defamatory comments were actually causing harm, wouldn't this person want the comments to remain unpublished? And might this not cause some lawyers not to want to be involved with advicescene? Lawyers like to be representing people in litigation, not personally involved.

We're still talking about it. A bit. If advicescene wanted to make lawyers afraid of questioning their business I'd say they achieved their goal.

Lawbuzz had it coming
Written by Taly , January 26, 2010
It's about time someone sued Lawbuzz. Frankly, I'm surprised they weren't sued sooner. That site is an unfortunate display of the lowest levels to which lawyers and students can fall. It may have tried to serve a good purpose, but the ranting and bad-mouthing had become so commonplace that it was hard to find a decent piece of information. I am appalled at how they repeatedly insulted and chastized individuals and groups, not to mention their disgusting display of "hottest lawyers". That site, I feel, must have been a bane for the good among the profession, when one thinks of what the public would think coming across it. Good job AdviceScene! Others should follow in your steps.
