Student salaries go up today
Written by Melissa Kluger
Thursday, 01 November 2007

Earlier this week we wrote about the announcement by Cassels Brock that they were raising articling student salaries to $1,450. Precedent asked other Toronto firms if they were also increasing the rate. Torys, Oslers and Faskens have confirmed that $1,450 is the new weekly pay, effective today. This is up from $1,300 which has been the going rate since 2000. On an annual basis, these salaries have gone from $67,600 to $75,400.

Any word on whether this increase will move starting salaries up?
And why exactly do you need a title for a comment?

If this is going to be a part gossip blog approaching the popularity/enjoyability of abovethelaw, the moderation seems a bit heavy handed.
Moderation and titles

Dear guest,

Thanks for the post. We hate to dampen your enjoyability, but as Canadian libel laws leave us responsible for posted content, we need to moderate. Especially when people choose to post anonymously. We'll do our best to moderate quickly to keep things fun.

As for the title -- leave it out if you want to.

*picks himself up the floor from those salaries*

*shakes self off*

OK, I'm better now. I'm remembering WHY the salaries are that high, but DAMNNN!!

1450 is peanuts. Top Canadian students (including myself) are heading to work in New York in record numbers. Bay Street firms will need to do better than adjusting for inflation (and hardly, at that) if they want to keep future students here.
what up

blg raised to $1450 too and threw in blackberries. but if the big firms are serious about keeping their talent, they'll start offering the option of doing 75% as much work for 75% as much salary.

Agreed. There should be two FORMAL tracks at law firms - one for those gunning for partnership, and one for people who prefer some semblance of work-life balance. The new generation does NOT want to slave away their whole lives. If attrition has been terrible in recent years, just watch, it will only get worse, unless something changes.
Strange perception
Written by Pete , November 08, 2007
There seems to be a strange perception about salaries and bay street lawyers. The salaries are very good, but if you want to be rich, become a banker or fund manager. If you want to be really rich and in law, go to New York, but don't be surprised at 2200 hours a year. If you want to do 75% of the work for 75% of the pay, be a lawyer anywhere else in Toronto. If you want intense, high level work, a stronger salary, and at least one failed marriage, become a bay street lawyer.
These all seem very funny now, in retorspect...

To the poster who called $1450 a week "peanuts" and bragged about leaving for New York: How's that workin' out for you? My guess is that you ended up laid off and back in Toronto with your tail between your legs, a year or two of totally irrelevant post-call experience, and zero Toronto job prospects... But hey, at least you made those big New York dollars, right?!?

Same thing, mutatis mutandi, to Strange Perception, who advocated becoming a banker in New York. Where would you have recommended going, Merrill Lynch or Bear Sterns?!?
