Written by Todd Harrison

Every weekday morning, Precedent scours the headlines to find stories likely to be today's hot topics.

  • Pension litigation is escalating between corporate plan sponsors and Financial Services Commission of Ontario, with retirees caught in the middle. [Globe and Mail — Law Page]
  • Jim Middlemiss: The inaugural Western Canada General Counsel Awards was a roaring success; Association of Corporate Counsel President Fred Krebs will fete RBC’s David Allgood tonight at Canoe. [National Post — Legal Post]
  • U.S. firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore will cut its second-year associate bonuses by more than half for 2009. [National Post — Legal Post]
  • “Tough-minded lawyer” Lawrence Dale is challenging Canada’s real estate establishment by paving the way for discount brokers to enter the market. [Toronto Star]
  • Christie Blatchford: a key prosecution witness with a mental illness raises tricky ethical questions for defence lawyers in the Omar Wellington murder trial. [Globe and Mail]
  • Sirhan Sirhan, the man who assassinated RFK, has been moved to a new prison — and his lawyer says the inmate's life may now be in danger. [New York Times]
  • Two charges have been dropped against the Chinatown grocer who chased and tied up a shoplifter. Now he’ll challenge his remaining charges (assault and unlawful confinement) by questioning the constitutionality of Canada’s citizen’s arrest law. [Globe and Mail]
  • Radovan Karadzic appeared yesterday for the first time at his war crimes tribunal in The Hague. Karadzic, who is defending himself, alleges that he needed more time to prepare. [New York Times]
  • Lawyer Lorne Waldman, who represents 15 of the Sri Lankan migrants who sailed to B.C. last month, wants the opportunity to question Prof. Rohan Gunaratna, the government’s Singapore-based terrorism expert who has alleged links between the migrants, their ship, and the Tamil Tigers. [Globe and Mail]
