Court Reporter: Tuesday, November 3
Written by Todd Harrison
Tuesday, 03 November 2009

Every weekday morning, Precedent scours the headlines to find stories likely to be today's hot topics.

  • Lawyers for the Tamil migrants who came to Canada on a rusty ship last month are concerned about the lack of detail in government allegations that trace amounts of explosives were found on board and on the men’s clothing. [Globe and Mail]
  • Maher Arar’s lawsuit against the U.S. government was rejected by an appellate court because his treatment was “in the context of extraordinary rendition.” [Globe and Mail]
  • Roman Polanski’s lawyer has submitted a new bail offer to the Swiss court. [Toronto Star]
  • Toronto lawyer Hadayt Nazami will bring controversial British MP George Galloway’s case against the Canadian government to Federal Court in January. Galloway was denied entry to Canada this past spring on the grounds that he supported a terrorist organization (Hamas). [Toronto Star]
  • American firm Sullivan and Cromwell failed to file an appeal on behalf of Alabama Death Row inmate Cory Maples, allegedly due to personnel shuffles at the firm. The judge wouldn’t roll back the deadline, and a habeus corpus petition on behalf of Maples was also denied. [Above the Law]
