UPDATED June 15

Precedent has been keeping track of hireback numbers on our super popular Hireback Chart. Below, we’ve done the math on hireback rates at Toronto's biggest firms. Here are a few things we learned:

  • Highest hireback rates: Osler (100%), Blakes (81%), Cassels (79%), Faskens (72%), Torys (72%)
  • Lowest hireback rates: Gowlings (28%), Miller Thomson (36%), FMC (47%), BLG (50%), Ogilvy (54%)
  • Firms that hire the most first year associates: Osler (33), Blakes (23), Stikeman Elliott (21) (note: Blakes hired 22 students, plus one student who clerked)

Hireback rates: Toronto firms with 12 or more articling students

You forgot DOJ
Written by Happily with the Feds , June 15, 2009
DOJ Toronto had 100% hireback (11/11). With 350 lawyers, we are one of the biggest "firms".
Percentages are off

Many of your percentages are off. Cassels is 58% not 79

Hi Aaron. We determined percentages based on number of students who asked to be considered for hireback, not total number of students. I've updated the post to make that more clear. Thank you.
Cassels Numbers are Wrong
Written by Law07 , June 16, 2009
Cassels only hired back 11 out of 19 (58%).

A couple comments...

1) Osler has a policy of hiring back 100%, but I think it is only for a 6 month contract as opposed to a permanent position - word is that some people are quietly shuffled off after the 6 month term. If so, this is probably harder on the Osler "associates" than if they had been competing in the market with others not hired back (as they articled with a very strong firm). Can anyone confirm?

"Opting Out" of hireback is often (though not always) because students have been told they will not be hired back if they "Opt In". Not sure if this is the case at Cassels or Davies, but it has been common practice elsewhere in the past.
Hirebacks correlate to associate lay-offs?
Written by Curious , June 17, 2009
Due to their low articling student hireback, do Gowlings and Miller Thomson have significant associate layoffs?
Gowlings Hirebacks
Written by Wiseacre , June 17, 2009
These figures are all for the Toronto office. There have been no associate layoffs at Gowlings Toronto (in fact, there have been a few hires at the mid- and upper levels in the past 12 months).
Summer Hirebacks

You should start another chart for summer to articling hirebacks. Make this a Law&Style institution

"You should start another chart for summer to articling hirebacks. Make this a Law&Style institution"

It's been my experience that, unless a summer student does something absolutely atrocious, hirebacks are 100%. Likely wouldn't be that informative of a chart.
Montreal Numbers?
Written by Jimminey Jill , June 30, 2009
Any way we could see some numbers for other markets? Montreal? Vancouver? Calgary?
Davies Hireback
Written by Top Dog , July 09, 2009
It is amazing how Davies markets itself as the premier bay street law firm, when amongst the seven sisters its hireback is the worst for this year. Word on the street is a bunch of layoffs are coming... I guess there is a "B Team" at Davies after all. You were warned!
