Written by Melissa Kluger
Tuesday, 28 April 2009

Hireback numbers continue to roll in from the firms — our numbers are fact-checked direct (no rumours or speculation here). Thank you to those firms that have reported already. We’ll update this post as we get more info.

We had requests to include information about start dates, and have added that information where available. Check back for more news!

Add percentages
Written by Anonymous , May 20, 2009
Have you considered adding a column showing percentages -- i.e. {(number of students hired)/[(total number of articling students)-(number who opted out)]}? This would give your table a lot more oomph, I think!

Hats off to the firms who reported their hirebacks. It's good to have at least some degree of transparency in these uncertain times!
Group hired into?
Written by James , May 21, 2009
If known, could you indicate which group the students are hired back into? Thanks.

Thanks for the A & B numbers, Lawgirl. We will confirm with the firm's director of student programs and then post the information in the Hireback Chart.

I understand that one of B&P's five hirebacks is to a one-year contract position.
Conspicuous by their absence
Written by Cavalier , May 25, 2009
I can't help but notice that some (larger) firms are not on the list above despite having notified their students weeks ago about hirebacks. I wonder why this information is being kept secret. I am fairly certain that the firms make this decision, not Precedent (see: the chart above). I find this to be poor decision-making on the firms' part. It's not like people don't find out the numbers. If anything it leads to potentially untrue rumours. Or maybe the truth is so horrifying it isn't to be believed?

Kudos to Precedent for trying to bridge the gap.

It would be great to offer similar ststistics for Vancouver - a market that has had quite weak hire back rates this year. Is this site strictly Toronto focused?

Really?
Written by A guy , July 15, 2009
So am I reading this chart right? Nearly every Toronto articling student is now starting in September 2009 or later? Really? This will mess up bar-calls won't it?
I get it, I think.
Written by A guy , July 20, 2009
The start date listed is the start-date for the articling students just recently called right? Those who just finished their articling.

Sorry for the stupid comment.

It's almost time to start one of these up for this year.

Some firms have already let their articling students know. Anyone have information on the numbers so far?
